VERMONT LOCAL ENGAGEMENTS

Major disasters are occurring at an alarming rate and Vermonters are calling for action. In response to the extreme weather events Vermont faced in 2023, Rebuild by Design released the “Atlas of Disaster: Vermont,” highlighting 17 federally declared disasters between 2011 and 2021 and advocating for long-term infrastructure funding. These disasters have required significant federal investment in recovery efforts. Vermont has received a total of $370M in federal assistance through FEMA and HUD programs to address these challenges.

Responding to Vermonters’ call to action, Rebuild by Design works with local Vermont organizations to build local capacity and knowledge to equitably adapt to extreme weather events in Vermont, and create sustained funding sources for State-supported climate infrastructure to address the challenges that extreme weather brings.

Washington County, Vermont, with 14 climate disasters ranks third in the nation for highest number of climate disasters in the United States.

Rebuild by Design is working with local Vermont organizations to co-host a virtual multi-part educational series targeted at educating current and incoming legislators, and building local capacity and knowledge to equitably adapt to extreme weather events in Vermont.
