DESIGN TEAM R&D: LONG ISLAND, NY AND BRIDGEPORT, CT REGIONAL MEETING – SITE VISITS AND WORKING SESSI

October 3, 2013 – October 5, 2013

All Day

Stage II

As a way to address infrastructural vulnerabilities, capacities of small communities, and water systems management, we embarked on a three-day tour through Long Island and Connecticut. Guided by local Nassau and Suffolk County officials, we toured several Long Island communities, meeting with local residents, emergency responders, health providers and representatives from New York State’s Community Revitalization Program. We also participated in an in-depth tour and discussion of wastewater treatment facilities. Teams then crossed the Long Island Sound for two days in Connecticut, which included visits to several infrastructural sites—electrical substations and a waste-to-energy plant—and interaction with experts in urban planning and economic development. Meeting with the mayors of Bridgeport and Milford, CT, teams discussed different initiatives carried out at the municipal level and saw a wide range of housing stock.
