NYC has been hit with record-breaking heavy rain. What happens when New Yorkers decide to tackle our new reality head-on?

Join us on May 19th to celebrate 10 extraordinary partners taking local action to “rainproof” their communities. Over the past year, partners from across New York City’s five boroughs have led community-driven projects – learning together as a cohort while bringing Rainproof NYC’s ideas to life in their neighborhoods.

From public murals to renter-focused AI tools to live performances, these projects show how creative, locally rooted solutions are already shaping a more rain-ready city. Join us to learn from their work and mark this milestone together.

Hosted by: Rebuild by Design & Rainproof NYC in partnership with ONE Architecture and Urbanism.

This event is free and open to the public. For any questions or accommodation requests, please contact info@rebuildbydesign.org.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR RAINPROOF NYC WORK:

NYC is increasingly facing storms that disrupt daily life and flash floods that threaten homes and infrastructure. Our century-old sewer system, agencies working in silos, and a new reality of increasingly heavy rainfall that no single department can solve alone.

Rainproof NYC is Rebuild by Design and One Architecture and Urbanism’s initiative to close those gaps, combining research, cross-sector collaboration, and community expertise to systematically transform how NYC lives with more water.

Rainproof [Your Community’s Name] is an initiative of Rainproof NYC, working with communities directly to address flooding from increased heavy rain. Over the past year, the initiative worked to bring ten projects, tackling their respective neighborhoods’ challenges, into a connected city-wide network of shared learning in support, tackling their respective neighborhoods’ challenges while simultaneously coming together for one movement: Rainproofing NYC.

This is just the beginning. NYC needs more neighborhoods to step up, more communities to get involved, and more New Yorkers to play their part. Come see what’s possible when communities lead, and leave knowing what yours could do.

On October 30, 2025, a flash flood in NYC claimed two lives and damaged homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure across several neighborhoods. The storm reminded us that extreme rainfall is becoming more frequent and that everyone has a part to play in keeping our city safe.

We compiled a Rainproof actions guide for how we can each play a role in rainproofing our city. This action guide has been compiled by resources with the Rainproof NYC “Everyone Has A Role to Play” Working Group.
