RainReady Newark

New Jersey

Category: Infrastructure, Plan

Year: 2024

Funding: Funded in part by the New Jersey Water Bank, and the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank

BACKGROUND

In response to New Jersey’s 2020 updated stormwater regulations and Newark’s goal of reducing flooding and combined sewer overflows, City of Newark’s Department of Water & Sewer Utilities developed RainReady Newark, which evaluates, designs, and installs cost-effective projects across both combined and separate sewer areas, targeting 213 acres of impervious surface. RainReady Newark uses green infrastructure to manage stormwater runoff, improve water quality, reduce flooding, and promote connectivity and equity while creating local workforce opportunities. This green stormwater infrastructure program incorporates robust community outreach and engagement, improves the city’s stormwater management and air quality, increases green and open space, and reduces Newark’s urban heat island effects.
