BACKGROUND
Malden River Works for Waterfront Equity and Resilience is a collaborative project that transformed the City’s Department of Public Works (DPW) yard on the Malden River at 356 Commercial Street into a vibrant, climate resilient public riverfront park for all. Malden River Works brings the river back to the center of civic life with a restored riverfront landscape, new public boating dock, over two-hundred new trees, rain gardens, a generous open lawn space, along with critical environmental upgrades for the City’s DPW. This project, designed with meaningful input from Malden’s diverse communities, reduces flooding, mitigates urban heat island effects, restores natural riverbank habitats, and provides an elevated greenway path that serves as a flood barrier to sea level rise.
