Forked River Beach Living Shoreline Project

New jersey

Category: Infrastructure

Year: 2025

Funding: Funded primarily through a $1,000,000 grant from NJDEP with additional contributions and donations from local, regional, and federal partners

BACKGROUND

In response to a nearly extinct oyster population and decades of eroding shoreline in Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, the American Littoral Society, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Stockton University, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection team up to create a living shoreline of oyster reefs, containing around 70 million juvenile oysters. The American Littoral Society installed several artificial oyster reefs along the shore in the bay containing around 70 juvenile oysters. This project, a partnership between volunteers, private, public, and nonprofits, serves as a nursery habitat, protective barrier against erosion and storm surge while also providing water filtration and wave energy mitigation services.
