BACKGROUND
In response to historic flooding in the State of Washington (more than $1.3 billion in flood-related losses since 1990), the Department of Ecology and Bonneville Environmental Foundation created and manage together Floodplains by Design (FbD), a capital grant program that reduces flood damage, improves working lands, and restores habitat along Washington’s streams and rivers. This public-private partnership provides flexible funding to design and implement various management best practices that enhance floodplain health and resilience to flooding, improve river health and support habitat restoration for salmon, and support agriculture. By transforming how floodplains are managed on a landscape scale, FbD supports thriving communities and a healthy environment. program with Bonneville Environmental Foundation through a public-private partnership.
