As part of an environmental remediation and community settlement agreement, BASF Corporation, the Borough of East Newark, the U.S. Department of the Interior, NOAA, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection transformed a five-acre former industrial site on the Passaic River into a vibrant community park with multiple green spaces plus a boardwalk, playground, and amphitheater that manages over 6 million gallons of stormwater runoff annually. This green infrastructure park with native plantings, pollinator gardens, and passive wetlands increased the city’s access to green space with park space land mass rising from 1% to 8% and corrected decades of industrial contamination.
