BACKGROUND
In response to years of major flooding causing hundreds of millions of dollars in property and infrastructure damage, the Wisconsin Legislature passed SB 222 which establishes a new program to help rural, flood-prone communities plan and implement projects to prevent future flooding. The grant program, administered by Wisconsin Emergency Management, provides grants to communities to conduct watershed planning and implement nature-based solutions that help mitigate flooding. SB222, passed with bipartisan support, will help address the state’s historic loss of 50% of its wetlands through floodplain and wetland restoration.
