SQREJC Flood Education Project
A documentary, a survey, and a campaign built to elevate the voices of Southeast Queens residents living with flooding.
The SQREJC Flood Education Project (FEP) tells the story of flooding in Southeast Queens through a two-part documentary, a social media campaign, and a Flood Experience Survey. Together, they show what flooding actually costs residents, particularly SEQ homeowners and residents in single and multifamily housing, and where the solutions need to come from.
The goal is to support Southeast Queens residents whose homes are at risk of basement and groundwater flooding, while building a more accurate citywide record of what flooding looks like in the borough. The documentary focuses first on South Jamaica, St. Albans, and Hollis, with outreach expanding from there.
FEP is actively elevating voices from Southeast Queens that have rarely shaped flooding policy. It captures stories and data that the city’s official record has missed.
The project directly supports Rainproof NYC Working Group 1 Recommendation 4 (strengthening community involvement in decision-making) and Working Group 3 Recommendation 2 (a public outreach campaign that prioritizes the people most affected by extreme rain).
THE OUTCOMES
Brought together Southeast Queens residents who have experienced extensive flooding to shape a documentary, a Flood Experience Survey, and a social media campaign."
