GRANT OPPORTUNITY: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
THE OPPORTUNITY: As climate change accelerates, New York City faces mounting challenges that demand innovative, collaborative solutions, as well as shared ownership over the challenges.
Rebuild by Design is excited to offer micro-grants of $10,000 each to three community organizations working to implement ongoing or new initiatives that address the recommendations and guiding principles from the Rainproof NYC Working Group process.
Join us in implementing the Rainproof NYC recommendations into localizing action. Together, we can adapt these citywide recommendations to localized action to mitigate the impacts of heavy rain.
From January to June 2024, the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice (MOCEJ), the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the NYC Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations (HRO), Rebuild by Design, and One Architecture & Urbanism, led the Rainproof NYC working groups. These groups gathered individuals and organizations with expertise in various fields to identify strategies and policies to address the increasing rainfall in New York City.
The Rainproof NYC working groups’ recommendations provide a framework to propel New York City’s community preparedness and local hazard mitigation planning to reduce the risk from heavy rainfall.
WHO YOU ARE: We are seeking individuals or organizations with ideas that align with the Rainproof NYC citywide recommendations and guiding principles to address the unique needs of NYC’s diverse communities, we are seeking applicants who will implement the Rainproof NYC recommendations at a community level to address a community’s localized risk.
WHAT WE OFFER:
- $10,000 micro-grants to support up to three new or ongoing initiatives that address the challenge of adapting to increased heavy rain in NYC.
- Implementation support from the Rainproof NYC working groups’ resources.
- Integration into the growing Rainproof NYC community of leaders and experts collaboratively addressing increasing heavy rainfall.
APPLICATION PROCESS
HOW TO APPLY:
To apply, please complete the application form, including attaching a link to your full project proposal. The proposal should be no longer than 3 pages. Proposals can include creative elements such as visuals, diagrams, or other innovative formats that help tell the story of your project such as videos, presentations, storyboards, etc.
The proposal should address the following questions:
- What is your proposed or ongoing project?
- What are the main goals of your initiative and what do you aim to achieve?
- How will a $10,000 micro-grant help your community Rainproof?
- How does your project align with the Rainproof NYC Recommendations?
- Who will benefit from this project?
- If applicable, where will the project take place?
- If available, what are the expected start and end dates of your project?

- Grant Notification: Final grant recipients will be notified by mid-December

To build on the Rainproof NYC Working Groups’ recommendations, Rebuild by Design is launching “Rainproof Your Community,” an open call for organizations with new or ongoing initiatives that address the recommendations of the working groups. Rebuild by Design will support three individuals or community organizations with a micro-grant of $10,000 each and provide additional access to resources through the Rainproof NYC network to support your initiative.
- $10,000 to support any new or ongoing initiative that addresses the Rainproof NYC recommendations and guiding principles.

- Integration into the growing Rainproof NYC community of leaders and experts addressing heavy rainfall risks.
Any organization or individual who is aligned with the Rainproof NYC recommendations can apply. Previous participation in this initiative is not required.
The Rainproof NYC Working Groups initiative ran from January to June 2024, with the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice (MOCEJ), the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the NYC Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations (HRO), Rebuild by Design, and One Architecture & Urbanism to identify strategies and policies to address the increasing rainfall in NYC.
The Rainproof NYC network consists of individuals, representing nonprofits, government agencies, individuals, academics, and private stakeholders who participated in one of three working groups that worked together to identify short and long-term solutions to heavy rainfall hazard mitigation. This network has since grown to include others passionate about helping NYC adapt to increasing rainfall.
