Olive Toran is the Atlas of Disaster Outreach Coordinator at Rebuild by Design, where she supports research, engagement, and coordination for the Atlas of Disaster project. With over a decade of experience in international development and humanitarian affairs, with a focus on Climate and Health, spanning the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, she focuses on climate mitigation and adaptation, helping communities reduce emissions and build resilience to climate impacts. She has contributed to numerous climate-smart initiatives, including her previous role with Médecins Sans Frontières’ where she managed communications for climate and health projects, conducted research on risk communications and humanitarian response in East Africa, and helped teams to develop decarbonization strategies. She serves as a board member for the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards (SAWS), advocating for the preservation of the Southern Appalachians through sustainable practices.
Additionally, Olive volunteers with the Gowanus Dredgers, focusing on educational outreach and community conservation efforts to protect urban waterways, and facilitates arts based participatory climate adaptation workshops in communities in NYC.
Olive is also a multimedia artist, herbalist, and published poet. Her creative work weaves together storytelling, poetry, and visual arts to engage audiences on environmental and climate justice topics. Grounded in healing and resilience, she draws on her musical background and a deep connection to nature to inspire sustainable action in both wilderness and urban settings.
Olive holds a Master of Arts in Global Communication – Development Communications (C4D) from The American University of Paris and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Spelman College.
