Flooding in New York: A Background on Preparedness, Response and the Role of Federal Programs

Flooding is a bi-partisan challenge, impacting every region of our state. According to Rebuild by Design’s Atlas of Disaster, from 2011 to 2024, New York experienced 23 major extreme weather disasters costing $26.8 billion in federal post disaster assistance—cyclones, severe storms and flooding were the most frequent. Increasing weather events pose on-going risk to the safety and livelihoods of New Yorkers. In this briefing, organizations across New York State focused on emergency preparedness, floodplain management, and local governance, will highlight critical flood preparedness and response projects supported by HMGP, CDBG, BRIC, and NOAA.

We hope you will join us to learn more about these critical programs and their impacts across the state.
