In October 2016, Bay Area academics, students, and practitioners convened to test and define elements of a shared curriculum for teaching resilience planning and design, specifically such that it reflects the challenges and resources in the Bay Area. The goal was to create a framework that can be used by any academic institution, while working to create solutions to real problems, fine-tune the understanding of resilience, and meet people in the field. 

The two-day event featured lectures, panel discussions, and workshops with leaders in architecture, planning, design, engineering, technology, and the social and physical sciences. The RBD_U hackathon challenged students and practitioners to solve complex real world problems for Oakland, San Francisco and the South Bay. RBD_U Bay Area was organized by Rebuild by Design, California College of the Arts Architecture, 100 Resilient Cities, New York University’s Institute for Public Knowledge, PennDesign and San Jose State University.
