Category: Infrastructure, Plan

Year: 2017

Funding: The City of Charles Town received a $75,000 grant to support implementation and construction of the Evitts Run Green Infrastructure Park, leveraged with local and partner contributions as part of a broader brownfields-to-greenfields revitalization effort.

BACKGROUND

The Evitts Run Green Infrastructure Park transformed a former industrial brownfield along Evitts Run Creek into a 5.26‑acre community park that combines habitat restoration, public access, and stormwater management in the heart of Charles Town. Through a partnership among the City of Charles Town, the Evitts Run Conservancy, and regional watershed and conservation organizations, the project cleaned up a contaminated site and re‑shaped the creek corridor with native plantings, stabilized banks, and green infrastructure features that slow and filter runoff before it reaches the stream. The new park provides trails, gathering spaces, and direct water access, turning a once‑blighted edge into a civic asset that reduces flood and water‑quality risks while reconnecting residents to their only local waterway and catalyzing additional reinvestment along the corridor.
