Los Angeles River Ecosystem Restoration

Los Angeles, California

Category: Plan

Year: 2021

Funding: Most recently, the project was allocated $28 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support restoration efforts.

BACKGROUND

Along the Los Angeles River, urban development and historical neglect have caused habitat loss and increased flood risks. Led by the City of Los Angeles in collaboration with federal and local partners, the Ecosystem Restoration Project will restore 11 miles of the river—from Griffith Park to downtown—by reestablishing historic riparian and freshwater marsh habitats while maintaining flood protection. The initiative emphasizes community-focused resilience through ecological restoration, recreational opportunities, and innovative land acquisitions such as the 42-acre G2 parcel at Taylor Yard, purchased by the City in 2017.
