March 23, 2014
12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Staten Island Museum, Staten Island
The Harbor School, Staten Island Maker Space, Rebuild by Design’s SCAPE / Landscape Architecture team and local residents built a life-sized, interactive oyster-reef model demonstrating the benefits of establishing these offshore breakwaters. The program, held at the Staten Island Museum, interweaved Staten Island’s past, present and future relationship to the shoreline through an exhibit of the Island’s historic shoreline and waterfront uses, and a discussion with local fishing community and author Paul Greenberg about the history of the island’s fishing industry. The event also featured a temporary installation created by local artists and immigrant communities that illustrated the importance of social networks in maintaining resilience.
I <3 My Shoreline is an event presented by Rebuild by Design with support from many other organizations, including SCAPE/Landscape Architecture, NY Harbor School, St George Tompkinsville Promenade, NY Rising, the Staten Island North Shore Business Association, Tottenville Civic, Prince’s Bay Civic, Gotham Whale, the Staten Island Zoo, the Staten Island Museum, and SI Makerspace.
