THE ONLY WAY HOUSTON CAN REBUILD AFTER HARVEY IS TOGETHER

Houston Chronicle:Yes, Hurricane Harvey hit Houston hard, harder than ever before. The storm showcased all Houston’s vulnerabilities – manmade, natural and human.

It was like a magnifying glass, enlarging reality and demanding a novel approach – novel for Houston, maybe, but not completely novel to the world and not so novel to my country, the Netherlands.

In my country, we started to live with water more than 1,000 years ago. We’ve built the Netherlands from a water democracy that dates back to the 1100s, when we elected our first water regulators. We had water experts before we were a kingdom, and now we have a king who is a globally respected water leader.
