DESIGN TEAM R&D: MANHATTAN REGIONAL MEETING – SITE VISITS AND WORKING SESSIONS

September 11, 2013 – September 12, 2013

All Day

Site visits in Red Hook, South Street Seaport, and Battery Park City

Two days touring sites around New York City introduced teams to physical and social infrastructural vulnerabilities in high-density urban environments. Assembling a group of experts in energy and transportation affairs, we analyzed New York City’s response to disruptions in its infrastructure following Superstorm Sandy and discussed strategies for building more resilient urban systems. In Red Hook, Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, teams visited commercial corridors and urban agricultural initiatives as a way of highlighting the important role of social and community resilience. A full day of working sessions considered waterfront development and the social implications of climate disasters.
