Storm Protection: Staten Island's First Oyster Reef

SI Live: The Billion Oyster Project seeded oysters to create the reef in a lagoon in Lemon Creek Park, Prince's Bay, on Wednesday.

Workers and volunteers from the Billion Oyster Project, including students from Governors Island's New York Harbor School and Deputy Borough President Ed Burke, joined together at the park for the oyster installation.

The effort is part of the Living Breakwaters Project -- which was selected by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to reduce waves, which prevents erosion and storm damage. Continue reading>>
