As a way to learn about issues confronting coastal communities along the New Jersey Shore, we held a discussion with the mayors of Sea Bright, Middletown and Monmouth Beach, along with city managers, emergency responders, community members and leaders of community-based organizations. Presentations by experts and members of RBD’s Research Advisory Group introduced the key issues surrounding fair housing, governance, beach access and economic development. A bus tour the length of Monmouth County’s coastline—with stops in Keansburg, Union Beach, Sea Bright, and Highland—allowed team members to visit the sites most affected by the storm. In Keansburg, teams had lunch at St. Mark’s Center for Community Renewal, which continues to provide needed emergency services to residents affected by Sandy. Design Teams presented mid-process research in a forum that allowed for peer feedback.
